Custom Subsystems

Synchronization modules for wireless base stations
and other applications


Symmetricom has supplied tens of thousands of custom subsystems to meet specific needs of many different network and transmission equipment manufacturers.

As the industry leader in synchronization and timing technologies, Symmetricom offers several key technology components that can be leveraged rapidly into custom subsystems, thereby accelerating the development of cost effective high performance systems without the need for a customer to develop expertise in timing technologies. This would enable an equipment provider to focus on their key technology and system and leave the design, implementation and supply of their timing subsystem to Symmetricom.

Bestime Technology (algorithm):
Symmetricom has patented technology that has been refined over years, to use multiple sources of time and frequency to adaptively generate and output timescale frequency that operates with stability better than any of the individual sources used. These multiple input sources may be any of a Cesium standard, GPS receiver, a local oscillator (either quartz or rubidium), or T1 / E1 lines. So, these subsystems are able to improve the locked performance while extending their holdover performance of the oscillators.

Oscillator technology:
Over the years, Symmetricom has developed expertise in crystal oscillator technology, qualification and selection of crystal oscillators. This expertise is indispensable in designing special oscillators for particular applications, as well as selecting the most cost effective oscillators for specific applications. This expertise can be leveraged by customers.

Symmetricom is also the world’s leading rubidium oscillator manufacturer and technology house. This expertise continues to be refined over the years with revolutionary rubidium technology implementation. Rubidium oscillators can be incorporated with other key technology elements to deliver superior holdover performance in custom subsystems.

GPS disciplining:
Over the years, Symmetricom has developed expertise in using GPS signals to discipline crystal and rubidium oscillators.

SmartClock (algorithm):
Compensates for oscillator aging rate to provide enhance holdover performance. This is a self-learning algorithm that characterizes aging and temperature response of the oscillator to predictably improve the aging of the oscillator and deliver superior performance.

Redundant Function:
Symmetricom has designed several of its subsystems to switch over in a dual card configuration. This hitless switchover function adds value to a failsafe system.

Symmetricom as a leader in timing and synchronization technologies can rapidly take existing technology blocks and existing platforms to provide robust timing subsystems in a wide variety of function, performance, and cost. Symmetricom has built tens of thousands of units that have been field deployed for years, meeting the needs of equipment manufacturers world wide for applications such as CDMA 2000, W-CDMA (UMTS), CDMA, DTTB, DVB-H, GSM, EDGE, GPRS, WLL, Location Measurement Units (LMU) and other wireless applications.
